Keep in mind, the majority of the audience are not super advanced lifters. I’ve been training for a total of 10 years and still don’t get too overboard with “isolation”. If you haven’t been training for 15-20+ years, you shouldn’t be tryna argue. - I can speak anecdotally here, my shoulders saw the most progress once I prioritized my shoulder press over the past year. Shoulders have always been a weak point, and I’ve had a weak shoulder press. I’ve done lateral raises literally no more than twice per month if that, and rear delt flies twice for the entirety of 2024 then 0 times all of 2025. - Now. For a bit of simple science. If you take your shoulder presses to at least 90 degrees or slightly below, you will be perfectly fine when it comes to your side delts, especially in the frontal plane, you will still be fairly decent in the scapular plane, but I’d definitely opt for more frontal for less pec involvement (things can vary), so a behind-the-neck press is great. So again, progress how strong your shoulder press gets, frontal plane would be ideal. - As for rear delts, it is extremely likely you don’t need “rear delt isolation”. Bc if that was the case, then I could assume you’ve been training long enough to actually point out legitimate weak points. But that probably isn’t the case.. bc you may be someone still sub 5 years in the gym with pretty much a lot of weak points. A row will do you just fine. A row is STILL doing me just fine. All I’m doing is continuing to improve them - You don’t program to isolate everything. You program to make the most out of everything with as little as possible. That’s how you “optimize” your training.
