Prayer and fasting are powerful tools for spiritual warfare, especially when it comes to casting out demons. In Matthew 17:21, Jesus tells His disciples that some demonic forces won’t leave except through prayer and fasting. This isn’t just about saying the right words—it’s about being spiritually prepared. Prayer strengthens our connection with God, increasing our authority in the spiritual realm. Without a strong relationship with Jesus, trying to cast out demons can be dangerous, like in Acts 19:13-16, where the sons of Sceva tried to do it in their own strength and got overpowered. Fasting, on the other hand, humbles us and weakens the flesh, making us more sensitive to the Holy Spirit. When we fast, we strip away distractions and tune in more to God’s voice, which gives us the clarity and power needed to break demonic strongholds. Jesus Himself fasted for 40 days before beginning His ministry (Matthew 4:1-11), showing us how essential it is for overcoming spiritual attacks. Daniel also fasted and received angelic help in a battle against demonic resistance (Daniel 10:12-13). The early church fasted before making big spiritual decisions (Acts 13:2-3).
