Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) confirmed Tuesday the Justice Department is investigating allegations about her campaign paying her husband to provide security services, but denied any wrongdoing and said she is fully cooperating with the investigation. The House publicly announced Monday that the sergeant-at-arms had been subpoenaed by the Justice Department, and Punchbowl News first reported that it was related to an investigation of the congresswoman. Rep. Bush, a former Black Lives Matter organizer who championed calls to “defund the police,” said she has faced “relentless threats” to her physical safety since her election to Congress in 2020. “As a rank-and-file member of Congress I am not entitled to personal protection by the House, and instead have used campaign funds as permissible to retain security services,” she said in a statement. “Any reporting that I have used federal funds for personal security is simply false.” The Missouri Democrat came under scrutiny early last year when she married her security guard and then kept him on her campaign’s payroll for providing security services. Federal Election Commission (FEC) rules prohibit personal use of campaign funds, but they also state that payments to relatives don’t count as personal use if the family member is “providing bona fide services to the campaign.” Rep. Bush said she has “complied with all applicable laws and House rules” and blamed “right-wing organizations” for lodging “baseless complaints” against her. “In accordance with all applicable rules, I retained my husband as part of my security team to provide security services because he has had extensive experience in this area, and is able to provide the necessary services at or below a fair market rate,” she said. Rep. Pete Aguilar (R-CA), the chair of the House Democratic Caucus, said earlier in the day he had no comment on the matter and had not spoken with Rep. Bush, referring questions to the Justice Department. #coribush #justicedepartment #doj #houseofrepresentatives #congress
