Idk where ppl live that phonics isn’t taught? It’s literally in all the curriculum used around us - is it enforced/practiced outside of the classroom, not really but it’s not the teachers not teaching

I think phonics has it’s place but it can be quite dull to teach. It can really help children decode words but it may not provide them with the skills necessary to understand what they are reading.
