Alexandrite is beautiful and changes from red to purple to green depending on the lighting. Black star sapphires are stunning and would look great with your monochrome look.

For mohs hardness alone, your choices are limited if you want something extremely durable. Alexandrite, sapphire, moissanite. I'd go Moissanite
