@authorbrandonsanderson: I dislike the term Mary Sue. It gets thrown around a lot when discussing characters in books/film/television. #BrandonSanderson #lotr #wot #filmtok #authorsoftiktok
Do y’all consider Rey Skywalker a “Mary Sue” in regards to her being too good too quickly?

I think that the Mary Sue isn’t so much about having competence, but rather that the competence feels unearned.

Superman is an prime pop example. He is the most competent fighter in the world so writers need to make him conflicts that he can't punch through. And that's how his best stories work

I thought one of the other defining features of a Mary Sue was that everyone is in love with them, and/or unrealistically amicable

Just because of who I am, I do have to point out that Samwise Gamgee technically canonically WAS good at politics since he was elected mayor like 12 times after his adventure with Frodo

I think Mary Sue has a lot more to do with this kind of a character that feels hollow but every word on the page TELLS YOU they are perfect. They are always morally correct, suddenly the most (1/2)

Hard not to see the gender aspects here. Thinking about jack reacher. Do we notice “over” competence more in female characters?

If I’m remembering my fanfic lore correctly the original Mary Sue was like 18 and on the bridge crew and better than them at everything while also having Kirk, Spock, and Bones completely smitten…

I think it's more like a character is a Mary sue if they have skills and abilities that are unearned. nobody would call 007 a Mary sue because he had a bunch of training before the start of the story.

I see it thrown around a lot to mean a character who gains competency through little or no effort. There's no challenge or character growth to them they are just really good now.

Do you have any examples of novels where the term Mary Sue is applied to a female main character but you feel is canonically incorrect?

Ive always took the term as a more one-dimensional character without much internal conflict and no personality besides being the good guy

Have you seen the Overly Sarcastic Productions video on this subject? Their take is that it’s pretty obvious that a Mary Sue is the only character the author cares about and beats us over the head…

Another facet is unearned competencies, and attributes portrayed as weaknesses that are too easily overcome

one small nuance that I feel gets lost on people when discussing Mary Sues (that also explains it's evolution from a term for a self insert character) is that NOT ONLY is the character extraordinarily
