For me, returning to the land is a two horned journey combining both inner and outer worlds. The first horn is the work of rewriting colonial and wounded patriarchal narratives. These stories sit deep in my subconscious and try to convince me that returning to the land and community is a pointless pursuit. These days, I keep a close eye on any voice that distrusts reciprocity. The second horn is to rewild the outer world. This takes many forms, but for me it's about learning the practical skills necessary to live closely with the land. Foraging, hunting, tracking, fire making, crafting and so on. But also to become aware of what a healthy ecosystem actually looks like. I'm from the UK, I'm actively having to learn what a healthy, wild ecosystem actually is, because l've barely seen it. So this is why I signed up to the old way. A course I chose and paid to go on. It's a 6 month course, meeting up 4 times in different environments, woods, rivers and coasts to learn the skills necessary to thrive in those places. I'm just back from my first week in the woods. What I thought would be a week of just practical skills actually became a week of deep grief for me. A realisation of quite how far we've distanced ourselves from the earth, how many pieces of the puzzle have been removed and how sh*t I am at the things humans have done for virtually all of our history. My grief turned to rage, acceptance and then love. To be around other humans who are committed to this journey. Some committed for longer than l've been alive. I have been reminded of how much I love the rebellious, and often scary journey of returning home. And that there is very little else worth my time. Thankyou @finnegantui for the perfect tune #youarefromhere #theoldway
