The Quapaw lived west of the Mississippi River and north of the Arkansas River in what is now known as eastern Arkansas. The Quapaws were also known as the "people who live downstream”. The Algonquian Indians of the Ohio Valley called gave them the name the "Akansa" ', meaning "south wind" " which n, became the name "Arkansas". The pronunciation preserves the memory of one of the Native Americans tribes who were the original inhabitants of our state.

It has to do with who colonized it origionally. France colonized Arkansas, while the Brits colonized Kansas
