@bratbustersparenting: When my 16 month old freaks out because she wants something, is there anything to do at the age to reinforce positive reinforcement? You just say no and let her process the fact that she just heard the word no. If they are upset at hearing no, that’s okay. Everyone’s trying to avoid the fit scenes, tantrums and meltdowns. That’s where the lessons are. Why would you avoid a lesson with your kid? Not everything can always go their way in life, and the sooner they can understand that, the better. With a 16 month old (I consider their babies up to about 15 months) you might use a bit of diversion, but not with giving them something. Just by pointing out what else is going on in the room.   But don’t be afraid of the fit. That’s where the lessons are. Looking for extra guidance on parenting toddlers?
