@anniebeasbeekeeping: I'm training an army of bumblebees to fight 🥊🐝 This is actually a bumblebee in a defensive stance, often if a bumblebee feels threatened before resorting to stinging, it will warn you by raising its legs in the air. Most of our bees, wasps and hornets sting at the first sign of threat, bumblebees are a little more reserved, although stinging does not kill them like it would a honeybee, bumblebees are renowned for their placid almost friendly behaviour and this just shows how laid back they can be. They are still capable of stinging and if you see a bumblebee raising its middle legs, rearing or vibrating its wings like this, it's time to back away. The technical term for this behaviour is disturbance leg-lift response (DLR), the sound she is creating with her wings is also for defence purposes, stinging is so last resort bumblebees have also been known to bite before stinging. Before anyone comes for me this bee landed on me and caught a little attitude, she did calm down and she did have a wash before I popped her on a tulip to go about her business 🐝🐝 #beekeeper #bee #nature #wildlife #bumblebee #fyp #education
