In this video, Shaykh Muhammad Musa Ash-Shareef acknowledges that the Arabs eventually intermarried with the ʿAjam—a term that usually refers to Persians. Some might argue, “That doesn’t prove the original Arabs were Black—maybe they always looked like Persians.” But what did the classical scholars actually say? 1. In Sharḥ Adab al-Kātib (p. 242), Ibn Qutaybah quotes al-Jawālīqī (d. 540 AH): “Curly hair (jʿad) is from the Arabs, while straight hair (sabt) is from the non-Arabs (ʿAjam), such as the Romans and Persians. His hair was curly, not straight—because straight hair dominates among the ʿAjam, while curly hair is predominant among the Arabs.” 2. Al-Khalīl ibn Aḥmad (d. 170 AH) said, as cited in Kitāb al-ʿAyn (vol. 3, p. 228): “They said to him: ‘This ḥamrāʾ (red people) has overpowered you,’ referring to the ʿAjam and the freed slaves—because the Arabs were known for their brown and dark complexions, while the ʿAjam were light-skinned and reddish.” 3. Abū ʿUbayd al-Qāsim ibn Sallām (d. 224 AH), in Gharīb al-Ḥadīth (vol. 4, p. 388), explained: “The term ḥamrāʾ means the non-Arabs (ʿAjam), especially the Persians and others, because most Arabs were dark brown or black in complexion, while the ʿAjam were typically pale and red-toned. It’s like when people say: ‘among the sons of Adam are the red and the black’—red for the light-skinned, and black for those with deeper tones.” 4. Ibn Fāris (d. 395 AH) stated in Maqāyīs al-Lughah (vol. 2, p. 101): “The ḥamrāʾ are the ʿAjam, named so because fair or reddish complexions were more common among them. That’s why they said to ʿAlī (may Allah be pleased with him), ‘This ḥamrāʾ has overpowered you.’” Now go back and listen to how Shaykh Muhammad Musa said that the people of Madinah avoided this mixing for a time—before eventually falling into it. That aligns with the powerful statement made by Muḥammad al-Nafs al-Zakiyya, a descendant of the Prophet ﷺ, who declared: “لم تعرق فيّ العجم” “No non-Arab (ʿAjam) blood has mixed with mine.” He was able to say that because, by his time, mixing with Persians had become widespread—except in rare lineages like his. And it’s no coincidence that he was described as pitch black in complexion, like charcoal and tar. So no—the Arabs didn’t originally look like Persians. They had their own distinct, Black identity, recognized by their hair, their color, and their culture.
