I’ve heard of brushing out tangles as “brushing out the rats (or rat’s nest)” so I’m guessing that’s where it comes from. I just call the actual clump itself a hairball!

I'm in the US and I've never called it anything. I've never heard of a "hair rat". I just would say cleaning out my brush...but good to know it's got a name.

So I thought that when you save the hair from your brush and form it into a bun or a roll maybe with a hairnet, that is a rat. Idk what random fallen out hair would be 🤷 but I know ppl did use (1/2)
