@cspanofficial: The Senate voted 60–34 early Saturday morning to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), just after authority for the controversial spy program had lapsed at midnight. The program allows the government to conduct targeted surveillance on foreign nationals outside the U.S. without obtaining a warrant. The intelligence community views it as critical to protecting the homeland, but privacy hawks on both sides of the aisle have raised concerns about the incidental collection of Americans' data. Before final passage, the Senate defeated an amendment that would have required the government to obtain a warrant to review the contents of Americans' private communications. A similar amendment narrowly failed in the House in a tie vote. The House cleared the two-year reauthorization bill last Friday in a 273–147 bipartisan vote after multiple failed attempts to get it through the chamber.
