Which one is your favourite? 🥰 Clip 1 and clip 2 show the biodiversity in a single drop of this pond water; the big round spheres are colonial green algae called Volvox, I’ll make a post about them very soon! You can also see tons of rotifers and micro crustaceans called Copepods that are just like Plankton in SpongeBob! Clip 3 shows one of these planktonic rotifer called Plationus with two eggs attached to it! Rotifers also known as “Wheel Animals”, are some of the smallest animals on this planet and get their name from the ciliated crowns located on their head, a characteristic structure used for both locomotion and gathering food particles.Clip 4 shows a flatworm bearing endosymbiotic green algae! Flatworms can be found in almost every colour; from white to red, bluish, yellow, brown, black and in this case even green! In exchange for protection against predators, shelter and a well suited environment, the photosynthetic algae give their host part of the sugars they’re able to synthesize using energy from sunlight! Clip 5 shows a unicellular organism called Pseudomonilicaryon, a beautiful ciliate which is also a predator of smaller cells. Clip 6 shows one of my all time favourites, a colonial green algae named Volvox! They are largely used for developmental biology and to study the transition from single cells to multicellular forms of life, just like Gonium colonies I posted two weeks ago! All videos were taken with my iPhone mounted on a Motic BA310E microscope with an @ilabcam adapter 🔬 References:Adam, M. C. M., & Balzer, I. (2001). Algal Symbiosis in Flatworms.
