@middleeasteye: Amazon Union Leader Chris Smalls spoke at the Gaza Solidarity Encampment at Columbia University. He expressed his rejection of bandwagon solidarity, emphasising the importance of speaking out on issues like ceasefire and genocide even when it may not be attractive for some politicians to address or when there are costs to be paid. Smalls called on labour leaders and politicians to join them in taking a stand. Notably, Palestinian activist Mohammed El-Kurd, actress Susan Sarandon, and activist Cornel West have also joined the strike. On the same day, Friday, over 100 pro-Palestinian protesters were arrested on New York's Columbia University campus. Police later cleared the encampment set up by students protesting Israel's actions in Gaza. Several students involved in the protest reported being suspended from the university and its affiliated institutions like Barnard College. Among them was Isra Hirsi, daughter of Ilhan Omar, a Democrat in the United States House of Representatives.
