Pilot Fish Cling to a Poisonous Cowfish I can't believe what I'm witnessing in my aquarium! In my previous video, I mentioned that this group of "sea bees" are actually pilot fish, known for their tendency to swim alongside larger fish. Well, it seems they've taken that to heart - overnight, they've started following one of the big fish in the tank. But out of all the big fish they could have chosen, why did they decide to cling to the cowfish? This isn't just any ordinary fish; the cowfish is highly poisonous. If it feels unwell or stressed, it releases tetrodotoxin, which could poison all the fish in the tank. I'm genuinely speechless. These pilot fish just won't stop following it, and the cowfish's swimming ability isn't even as good as theirs. It can't shake them off no matter how hard it tries. So, why do small fish like these pilot fish swim next to big fish, even when it's risky? Here are some reasons: Safety and Protection: Big fish can scare off potential predators due to their size and strength. By staying close, small fish reduce the risk of being eaten. Learning Survival Skills: Small fish learn how to find food, avoid dangers, and adapt to their environment by following experienced big fish. Group Behavior: Many fish species are social and engage in group activities. Following big fish helps small fish integrate into groups, gaining access to more resources and protection. Reducing Water Resistance: Swimming behind big fish allows small fish to take advantage of the water flow cut by the larger fish, reducing their own swimming resistance and saving energy. This behavior is common among fish and is a survival strategy they've adapted over time. It's fascinating to observe these dynamics up close, even if it poses a potential risk in my aquarium.
