I have been freelancing for over 12 years now, and have played in the pit orchestra for over 41 musicals (yes I have kept track). I can without a doubt say that hadestown is now not only my favorite musical, but one of the most unique peices of art I’ve ever seen. The writer of this for SOME reason decided to make the trombone one of the focal points of the sound of the music, and yes that is one reason I enjoyed the show, BUT it is much more than that. The way it portrays story telling is extremly unique. It takes the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice and retells it in this almost folk-jazz, New Orleans kind of style. The music doesn’t sound like your typical Broadway show. It’s earthy, bluesy, and rooted in storytelling traditions. The show also breaks the fourth wall a lot, like the characters know they’re telling you a story, which makes it feel both ancient and modern at the same time. It’s about hope, resilience, and what people are willing to risk for something better. It gives it a depth a lot of musicals don’t quite reach. If you haven’t checked out the music for this show I recommend you do! It mixes a lot of different styles and genres in a way that is very artistic. The pit orchestra is also very interactive with the play, not only are we all on stage, but we are almost apart of the play unlike other musicals where we are down in the pit. I even got to double on the glokenspiel……LOL. If you are a trombonist with a background in jazz and pit work, and you get offered to play this show. Say yes!
