@missclairebenjamin: 🚨 Handling the “scruffy” one👇 Speaking to someone about their appearance at work can be a sensitive matter and therefore it’s important to try and approach it as sensitively as possible. It can be tempting to be really blunt and tell them they need to smarten up their act. And you may even feel frustrated you have to raise it. The truth is we are all so different and see things in a very different way. Everyone has difference preferences, values and comes from different cultures. It’s really important to keep this in mind. I would recommend trying to assume the best in the person. Let them know kindly, respectfully and clearly why their work appearance is important and avoid showing judgement. Let them know it’s a sensitive conversation and ask them if they are happy to discuss it at that time. Explain why: “Outside of work clearly we can all dress however we want. Inside of work because [INSERT WHY ITS IMPORTANT] it’s really important you’re as work presentable as possible” Be clear and specific: “This includes [eg ironing your shirt, keeping hair off your face and neatly tied back, no nail polish].” Make a clear request: “Can I ask that you be mindful of doing these things going forward?” 📌 Please be mindful that the approach shown in this video will not fit every situation so always use your own judgement.
