As shows of resistance go this is quite the appearance, Major General Ahmad Vahidi the head of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, appearing among the crowds paying tribute to the late Ayatollah Khamenei. As we were filming this morning Vahidi appeared without ceremony, suddenly part of the mourners who were weeping and praying close to the coffins of the late ayatollah and his family. He was surrounded by heavily armed security and at the end of prayers was whisked away in a scrum of cameras amid shouts from the public of “revenge, revenge, revenge.” As the head of the IRGC, he is in the top tier of those Israel wishes to kill. As the military leader of Iran he has masterminded the Iranian response to US Israel war. His appearance today, joining the hundreds of thousands at the official prayer ceremony for the late ayatollah, represents a show of defiance to those who seek his end. There had been claims he had already been killed but images appeared at the end of last week of him paying tribute to the former leader. Today’s appearance marks the first time he has been seen amongst the public since the start of February. The crowds at the prayer centre where Ayatollah Khamenei is lying in state were significantly larger today than yesterday. Made up of those who support the Islamic Republic they have been huge in number but do not represent the feelings of all Iranians. As well as leading the military response Vahidi has been key in formulating Iran’s stance in negotiating a possible permanent end to the war with the United States. It is understood he is one of only a few of Iran’s senior figures with direct contact to Iran’s new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who remains in hiding after being reportedly wounded in the Feb. 28 Israeli strikes that killed his father. Leaders of the Islamic Republic and its supporters have determined to mark the passing of the late Supreme Leader with a show of defiance and strength. Today’s appearance was part of that strategy.
