Buddy Ebsen told this story about asking Shirley to rehearse this dance number in the film: She got there and asked him, ‘Is the dance set?’” He said, ‘No, I’m going to make a couple of changes.’ She turned around and said, ‘Call me when it’s set, and I’ll learn it.’ The point is, she didn’t have time to learn a dance that wasn’t set.” When Shirley returned, she learned the routine in just an hour. She was only 7 years old during the filming. Shirley was Hollywood’s number-one box-office draw as a child actress from 1934 to 1938.
