@missclairebenjamin: 🚨Handling the “hothead” 👇 It’s a very instinctive and automatic reaction to become defensive and attack back when someone approaches us in an attacking way. It’s an invaluable skill to learn not to match people’s energy and instead remain calm so the situation can be deescalated. And so you can always feel you’re acting with integrity. There are a couple of really powerful ways to deescalate conflict: 1️⃣ Speak in a slow calm voice Our own energy can often alter the state of the other person. Speaking in a calm slow voice also helps slow down the conversation 2️⃣ Ask questions to allow the person to share what is bothering them This serves two purposes- it helps you understand more about the issue and it helps them feel heard 3️⃣ Calmly and clearly share your needs If they are being disrespectful say something like: “I really want to address this issue. To do that I need you to speak to me respectfully as that comment didn’t feel respectful” 4️⃣ Take a break If the person continues to come in hot and isn’t calming down, let them know you think it’s wise to take a break. You can say something like: “I’m sensing it might be wise if we both step away from this now and talk about this more tomorrow to allow the intensity/ heat to leave the situation” Remember you don’t need to tolerate disrespect. You also don’t need to match disrespect with disrespect. 📌 Please be mindful that the approach shown in this video will not fit every situation so always use your own judgement. And if someone is being consistently disrespectful get support. You’ve got this! 💬 Have you ever been in this situation? "...once the heat has left the situation a bit" is *so* much better than, "I can see you're angry right now so we can talk when you've called down."

How do you deal with a mentally unstable employee? Very defensive, blames everyone for their mistakes, overly dramatic?
