I thought its because of the malay regiment during WW2 in Malaya? When british troops have them and thats where lieutenant in malay is Leftenan and Leftenan adnan is called Leftenan not lieutenant 🤔

Small detail…’lieu’ (meaning ‘place’) is not pronounced ‘loo’/‘lu’ (which means ‘read’). It’s more of a ‘lyuh’ sound.
