It was built four times! It was established at Old Taal (current San Nicolas) in 1574 after the first church in Balangon (community na tinatag ni Fray Austin Albuquerque noong 1572) was attacked by Moros. It was then moved to the current location after the volcano erupted in 1754. Nasira ang lumang simbahan sa kasalukuyang lugar noong 1854 pagkatapos ng isang lindol kaya the town started to plan a new and bigger church noong 1856. It was 1858 when they started the construction of the current church we know of today. Hindi pa tapos ang Basilica pero pwede nang gamitin kaya pina-bless at binuksan na siya to the public noong 1865. Until today, hindi natapos at nasunod ang design ni Architect Luciano Oliver dahil hindi na nagawa ang isang tower sa kabilang side (sobrang bigat na ng structure, hindi kakayanin ng lupa)
