I visited a high school in Japan during an exchange program. They hosted a culture day where a bunch of moms dressed us all in yukatas and let us keep them. They were so happy to see us wearing them!

My mother in law's career was working in a kimono shop. She certainly had no hesitation in dressing me up properly. Even in jinbei, people say I'm おしゃれ and a ダンディ.

It totally depends on intention. I wear my jinbei all the time in the summer because it's comfy and keeps me cool. People really get appropriation and appreciation conflated

Wearing a kimono while you visit japan, or a kilt if you visit Scotland is fine if it's just you enjoying the culture. There needs to be malice intent behind it for it to be cultural appropriation

I have never felt prettier than while i was wearing kimono! Not even on my wedding dress! And people were so kind and exited to see me wearing one! I love Japanese culture i learned language before going there i was priviliged to wear one !
