it would be much more appreciated if academia got paid more. instead of over paid admin folks and fancy lazy rivers in colleges they should pay, grad students,post docs and profs

i have to disagree. the amnt of tenure track positions has decreased and university officials & the govt have shown they have no intention on increasing it but are in the # of underpaid adjuncts

Salary in uk is not great for academics. Couldn’t buy a house/apartment in London for example

btw, I took my MS in applied math to law school and loved it. law is another great career for mathematicians!

It doesn’t have to be so hard, and academia doesn’t have to require your soul the way it does. Much of academia is toxic

Getting a good job as a software engineer isn’t that hard tbh if you’re smart. At least it wasn’t when I was getting in the industry.

Of course it's harder to get to academia. suppose 10% of phds become professor. where do the 90% go? outside of academia

Academia is _really_ tough for long-term serial postdocs and adjunct profs. Universities should stop offering those jobs and nobody should take them. Tenured faculty like me need to keep this in mind.
