I laugh after moments of terror. Laugh or cry, always one or the other. 🤣 or 🥹 At least now I do not doubt my 4 yr olds “emergency” stopping abilities. “Hockey stop” practice is underway, and in the meantime she knows the true emergency stop if the wedge doesn’t work- fall down to the side and dig in. I’m often asked how I manage my anxiety while teaching my kids activities like skiing, mountain biking, climbing. I’ve experienced traumas that have heightened my anxiety tremendously, so this is a good question for me. I have to be conscious when we are adventuring so my anxiety doesn’t consume me and them. I don’t want it to shape my kids relationship with the outdoors. What has helped me the most is having experience myself so that I have a sense of the flow of things, the skills needed, and the risks. And if I don’t have experience, partnering with someone who does, and learning all I can. I’m much more chill skiing than I am in a raft because I’m clueless about river water, and I tend to heighten with unknowns. Makes sense. And then of course- trusting the process helps me. Seeing their abilities and my comfort grow over time. And honing my ability to know the difference between my irrational anxiety and real risk I need to mitigate. My motivation? I know the importance of letting them figure things out when there isn’t true danger that could seriously harm them, not only so they can fall in love with the activity, but also so they hold the key to their own safety and assessment moving forward. #momlife #skifamily #lettheoutsidein #skiingwithkids #letthembelittle #consciousparenting #honestmotherhood
