I set myself a budget of £700 / $890 It wasn’t super strict but I didn’t really want to go too much over… I think what really pushed me over was the flight from Nairobi to Kilimanjaro, £163 !!! They’re pretty close to each other too, you can take a 6 hour bus for less than £20, which had been my original plan. I ultimately chose to take the flight because I was really concerned about taking a land border crossing as a solo female traveller, especially as this is my first time travelling in Sub-Saharan Africa, I felt that perhaps the international airport of Kilimanjaro might feel a bit safer. I was also stressed about having the correct paperwork, visas, vaccinations etc entering Tanzania and thought I would rather be at an international airport than at the whim of a land border crossing agent. In hindsight, the bus is probably a good option for most budget travellers (although I can’t comment on that experience since I didn’t take the bus) but I’m glad I chose the flight since there was a massive issue with some of my paperwork and vaccinations, which they might not have been able to fix at the land border! Also, these are the prices that I paid in January, but the £/$ is based on the current conversion rate so there may be some variation on the dollar that I haven’t accounted for
