Beginners / inexperienced owners should not handle at all. It can greatly stress them out and lead to harm, including them pinching you. They are natural animals of prey and could think you are a predator. You can build trust with your hermit crabs over lots and lots of time and proper care, but even then should rarely ever be held. I only ever rarely do, and a lot less than I once did, after becoming more educated on the topic :) After being with mine for a multitude of years, I have built trust among my hermies. They don’t feel threatened, they know they are safe, they know who I am. I would never hold a hermit crab that is scared / unfamiliar with me. Only when one that trusts me is out and about, I will gently pick up, or they will crawl right onto my hand! Beginners should not handle at all, experienced owners I believe it’s ok to use your best judgment and keep it rare occasions. Should only ever be a minute or two out of the tank anyways, so they are not away from proper heat and humidity for long. #hermitcrabs #hermitcrab
