Clothes Minded the podcast is available wherever you get your podcasts. Obviously, my “it’s all rectangles” theory isn’t THE definitive statement on African design and pattern making but it is pretty cool how across this vast and diverse continent, some of the same things keep coming up. Recently, I’ve been looking at connections between Asian embroidery and African styles which just made me realise how much we’re all just searching for and creating beauty and meaning and we have so much in common on that front, everywhere in the world. I’m in love with all the ways it realised in similar patterns and trends. But, what’s more, in the African context, is how this all happened and continues to happen considering the multitude of crimes and distress we’ve all faced. You might notice West Africa’s over represented in my image sourcing which, while eye opening for someone who’s never been there, is exactly why I wanted to start Clothes Minded. In South Africa alone, there are over 12 recognised ethnic groups and I haven’t seen any comprehensive and accessible databases on the dress culture of those let alone the many other small tribes and ethnic groups and then you bring the rest of SADC into the mix and there is much more to be discovered and shared. #clothesmindedpodcast #clothesminded #africanfashion #africanfashionhistory #fashionhistory #historicalfashion #medievalafrica #africanhistory #southafricanhistory
