This was so hard to unlearn once we escaped from the hive mentality of public school, but this is what “child-led education” means. It’s fostering their interests and letting them pursue the things they care about. I always tell people, “We homeschool, we don’t do public school at home.” We still teach the basics; reading, writing, math, but if they don’t enjoy a subject, we don’t punish them for it by slamming them with more work in the area that they’re clearly not interested in. We either try to find ways to make it more fun, or we redirect and revisit at a later time. I hated math growing up. I had to re-do geometry twice in high school. It made me hate math even more as an adult, and I’ve never once used it beyond the bare basics in the real world. However, our 6 year old LOVES math. At first, I subconsciously tried to steer her away from it and more towards English (my favorite) because it wasn’t something I thought was that important, since I’ve never personally used it. She consistently steered me back towards it, and now she’s doing multiplication in her head at 6 AND reading chapter books, because I didn’t force my love of English on her, she eventually came back around to it herself. If I had let my own biases drive her focus, she’d be miserable, and probably wouldn’t be very good at either English or math now. The same goes for every other subject. Not every kid is meant to grow up and be an English teacher, or a mathematician, or fit a cookie cutter mold of their primary education. It’s okay to let go of the projections we carry from our personal experiences and the deeply ingrained ideology of the public school narrative that says, “All kids have to be exactly the same and progressing in everything at the exact same rate.” If we don’t foster the things they’re interested in when they’re young, it becomes so much harder for them to know what that is when they’re older and it comes time to pursue a career. We are raising free-thinkers, not slaves to the system. #fyp #fypシ #fypage #homeschool #homeschooling #homeschoolcollective #homeschoolmom #homeschoollife #unschool #unschooling #roadschool #roadschooling #childledlearning #rvlife #rvliving #traveltok
