I clean stuff all the time, and then I get yelled at for taking to long to do my work. It’s pretty rare that I break it but it also isn’t really broken to begin with.

I spent 4 months rebuilding entire sections of an app because the code was beyond 💩 and the original coders were no longer there. When it was done, I felt like my chakras were fully aligned! 😊

Then you clean it, set it up to work with expected inputs and it breaks something 6 layers down because some bit of code relies on the original code 'working' with inputs it was never intended for.

The problem starts with the assumption that the code needs cleaning So you are basically saying that you know better If it works though it at least meets one important requirement.

I think it would be more accurate to say that when you see bad, ugly code, you raise a ticket to clean it and your BA / product owner never let you bring it into the sprint because "priorities" :)
