@boatgurus: Everyone loves some “Marlin jumping in a boat” footage. This was sent in by my friend Gaspar from Cabo who I met over in the Azores on the “Double Header”. And for those who are going to be upset about using the fish bat, I provided a brief description of why it’s used. And no, the meat wasn’t wasted! Explanation: There are a few reasons why fish are sometimes hit on the head with a blunt object like a bat or “priest” after being caught: 1. To kill the fish quickly and humanely. A forceful blow to the head aims to render the fish unconscious immediately so it does not suffer. This is considered more humane than allowing the fish to suffocate in air or on ice. 2. To prevent the buildup of lactic acid and stress hormones in the fish’s flesh. When left to die slowly, the stress response in fish releases chemicals that can negatively impact the taste and quality of the meat. Killing the fish instantly prevents this. 3. To make the fish easier to handle for cleaning and filleting.
