This video is a lot of information at once, so I would recommend saving it. I’ll also make shorter more specific videos on each component with my thoughts and experience about them. Things you NEED: Bees- I recommend a Nuc from your general geographic area. Get two if you can afford it and I’ll talk about why in another video. I would avoid buying a package. Most nucs only come with deep frames. That’s okay if you want to run mediums like me. I’ll show you how to convert those in a separate video. Hive: bottom board with entrance reducer (definitely screened if you live in the South) Hive bodies: start with at least 2 mediums OR 1 deep brood chamber and 1 shallow honey super. I recommend getting at least one more extra of each because by the time you know you need them, it might be too late and they could potentially swarm. Eg. Your original queen leaves with half the bees to look for more space elsewhere. Your options will be wax dipped, painted or unpainted. If buying unpainted, they will need to either be painted or otherwise sealed on the OUTSIDE only by you. They will also come assembled or unassembled. I always buy unassembled and I’ll make you an assembly video. Buy either, but assembling them yourself will save you money. If you are buying a deep nuc with the intention of using medium boxes, I’ll show you how to make a spacer. You will need a spacer. Waxed Frames that fit those hive bodies. You can buy them already assembled or unassembled Feeder. I highly recommend an internal feeder, not an entrance feeder, not an external hive top feeder. Get either an internal hive top feeder like you see on my hives or an internal frame feeder. Frame feeders aren’t my favorite but they are better than external feeders Telescoping cover Sugar- yes, you’ll need to feed your new bees until there is a honey flow or they have drawn out wax in 2 boxes. Cost break down: Nucs $150-$200 You can buy already make Kits-Hive components and supplies put together already. Kit $160 -$400 No, I don’t recommend the Flow Hive. I’ll make an entire video on why not. Do I need a suit? Maybe, but you definitely need at least a Hood $60 for hood.
