So they have a double layer coat in the winter time and summer time the insulation layer sheds out creating space between fibers for air to pass through allowing full air circulation

I don’t understand how it works either! But apparently it’s the under coat Underneath the coat that does the magic effect of cooling/warming them. I have 2 Pomeranians that my groomer will Not shave down even when I think they need it! She said it actually hurts them and their coats doing a shave. So, we just brush out and bathe on the daily over here!!

most people cut or shave their dogs hair short in summer not realizing the fur protects the skin from the Sun therefore keeps them cool.

It really is. That’s why they don’t recommend you shave them. It helps them regulate their body temps. People will shave them in summer and it makes it worse. It’s basically an A/C for dogs

top coat keeps the sun off the skin and allows airflow while insulating the temperature. which is one reason to keep the undercoat brushed out.

From what I heard , dogs generally have the ability to trap air under their skin or fur or something ,so when it’s really hot they don’t feel it. So probably he’s lying down there cause it’s cool

We kept them clean with cornstarch and light spray with water. Dirt dries and brushes off. The only thing that got washed is the back end to remove urine stains.
