@erinmcgoff: If you work in the U.S., you probably saw “breaking news: FTC bans non-competes” last week in the news. 💥 This is a BIG DEAL. Non-competes have stifled employees options when it comes to finding new jobs. 🤑 (I wanted to wait a few days for the dust to settle before making a video on it—so here you go!) Although non-competes are rarely enforced, they affect ~30 million American workers from hopping to new opportunities, or starting new companies of their own. The ironic thing is, non-competes are kinda anti-capitalist. Capitalists want more freedom in the market, it encourages more competition and therefore innovation (*cue bald eagle caw here*). So get outta here w those anti-American non-competes 👋 we’re not afraid of a little competition!! So the FTC move was kinda anti-anti competition lol. This is a huge win for American workers and innovation. Some big biz owners might be shakin in their boots (but it’ll be fine yall). However, the U.S. chamber of commerce (basicalllllly the country’s biggest business lobby) has already sued the FTC being like “you can’t do that!” and so now it miiiiight get tied up in a legal battle. So we will see. 👀 #ftc #noncompetes #nda #corporate #career #careeradvice #careertiktok #jobsearch #jobsearch #breakingnews
Also isn’t non-compete just saying you can’t work at a competitor while you’re still employed by the company you signed it for?

Never sign anything saying you can’t work for a “competitor” company. It just gives them power to screw you over to where you can’t get out and get a job in your field.

It has since been blocked by federal court as of August 20th, 2024. Therefore non-competes are still legal and all pre-existing and future non-competes are legal.
