@missclairebenjamin: 🚨Handling the underminer👇 When a colleague undermines us it can be infuriating and cause a lot of resentment. It can also be difficult to know how to address it especially if you suspect it could be intentional. Sometimes people are unaware that what they are doing is coming across as undermining. Sometimes people are doing it intentionally. And sometimes people will not acknowledge what they’re doing is undermining. This is why it’s important to lead with curiosity to understand which of these categories they fall into. You can say: “I’ve noticed on several occasions you’ve said things in meetings that have come across as undermining. For example A,B and C. Curious if you’re aware of this and if there’s something going on that we need to talk about?” If they aren’t open to hearing how their approach is impacting you I’d recommend doing the following: 1️⃣ Try to remain calm especially if they continue to question your judgement and antagonise you. By not biting the bait you will shift the dynamic. 2️⃣ Let them know you are open to being challenged respectfully if they are concerned about your decision making and that you’d be happy to talk them through your thought process. 3️⃣ Ask them to raise their concerns with you in private going forward outside of meetings so you can fill them in on the full context and all the facts. 📌 Please be mindful that the approach shown in this video will not fit every situation so always use your own judgement and adapt it to suit your own circumstances. You’ve got this! 💬 Leave a 🙌 in the comments if you’re going to keep this approach up your sleeve ✈️ Share with someone you think this could help 🚀 Follow for more tips on handling tricky situations at work #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #communicationskills #difficultconversations #assertivecommunication #difficultpeople #assertive

What’s the problem in discussing decisions/approaches in the meeting with the team? Good leaders are usually happy to have such discussions and prove their point or agree that it’s not the best option

How do you handle an employee that constantly plays the victim and tries to turn everyone on the team against the boss?

I would say "this would address [not squash] your concerns". It's a more neutral term, plus you cannot preempt that her concerns will be squashed. Otherwise, very helpful.

Love your videos! I’ve learned a lot. Can you do one on how to handle a team member that keeps making the same mistakes and how to encourage them ?
