Why do I consume palm oil? This was a question I kept getting a lot as a vegan cooking Ghanaian food (and west african food). For west and Central Africans, palm oil has been an important part of our culture and history. Like any indigenous crop, the people who cultivated it know how to use it best and use it in its entirety. It’s rather unfortunate that our traditional use of palm oil is vilanized. And it is not used on the same way Western countries are introduced to palm oil. This response is more geared towards the use of red palm fruit and oil in cooking or even what is included in everyone’s favourite “African Black Soap”. These are all made at a small scale level. HOWEVER, our greedy politicians are starting to sell swarths of our forest for oil palm plantation with kernels exported straight to Europe without commercial use. There is a sharp distinction between palm oil used in African food sourced from African countries and the palm oil used in your favourite cosmetics or processed snacks. The purpose and origin are not the same. This is the distinction I want people to remember. For additional resources, check out Books - unfortunately written by white people but they are the most comprehensive I have seen - Oil Palm: A global history (Johnathan Roberts) - Planet Palm: How Palm Oil Ended up in everything (Jocelyn Zuckerman) Blog Post @yewande_komolafe: the problem with palm oil don’t start with my recipes Podcast Gastropod - the most interesting oil in the world - comprehensive overview of palm oil history BBC world services: Climate of Danger:Exile - talks about oil palm plantation in Liberian forest
