We are on a bind- since credit scores are based on credit cards- I’ve paid off cc and my credit report reported -41 points for paying it off 🙃 what gives ?

Just don't use cc's, use debit instead and you will not have to pay huge expenses just because you use your own money. Those are silly money for cc's.
