@evan_holmes_: The leg extension is one of the only exercises where the rectus femoris DOES get trained (anything where knee extension happens while the hips don’t change position). I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and say it would be reasonable to suggest that leaning back more might stretch the rec fem enough for it to experience some passive tension and therefore grow a bit more (until it’s resting length increases enough that the leaning back doesn’t stretch it enough create any tension) but it’s just objectively false to say it doesn’t get trained at all without that, especially since the vast majority of muscle growth comes from active tension created from contraction and not passive tension. I find leaning back just helps me feel more stable and get better leverage to extend my knee, any additional growth from stretch would be a bonus, but you’re definitely training the rec fem without doing that. ~$1/day to join my online training groups designed for beginner to advanced lifters where we implement research-backed training principles to ensure progress.
