@samiahurstmajno: Replying to @P #surrogatepregnancy is one of the more controversial techniques of #assistedreproduction so it deserves a #slowethics to its #ethicaldilemmas

To challenge one fact asserted … the surrogate mother does exchange genetic material with the child. Mothers who use donated eggs can have kids that look JUST like them all the time …

not being allowed to be a parent will be the only real regret in my life. my husband and I have been together for 23 years and both wanted children. even in 2024 we are not allowed to marry... Italy..

I am Canadian, and know people who are surrogate mothers. I know that there is exploitation, however the people I know are actively choosing to do surrogacy and are happy to do it.

I think it is also important to consider from the point of view of the child. If we listen to adults who were adopted as infants they describe pre-verbal trauma of separation from the person they(1/2)

Surrogacy is at least a route for gay couples. Adoption is an attempt to correct a wrong. In no way perfect, but at least it's not bringing into the world more children.

I think it’s like many other things that are good in theory but the actual practices often seem dodgy. Also too often emotional manipulation guilt people into doing it

It’s a very difficult issue, but currently my view is that surrogacy for profit should be illegal.

I don't understand how one can be against consensual surrogacy. I'm all for strong agreements beforehand + safeguarding surrogates' rights, but if someone is willing, who are we to intervene?

Surrogacy is more acceptable to me than ivf. So unnatural and unnecessary, considering the number of abandond or orphaned children. Just adopt

The contrargument of "adoption is allowed" assumes that because adoption is allowed means it's morally neutral - many people that adoption is always traumatic even if the child is too young to +1️⃣

I think since this IS happening, there should be financial rights regulated for the surrogate mother rather than just forbidding it. Personally I’m against surrogacy and infant adoption

in Brazil it's forbidden to receive monetary gain for surrogacy. voluntary is allowed, but you have to be a family member or get clearence from the medical federal board, to assure no exploitation

Let’s say surrogacy is commonplace with thousands happening every month. 50% use a human surrogate and 50% use an artificial womb (no human involvement outside of the inserted gametes). Does that…

in theory: if someone is gifted a body that can grow and birth babies well, why not let them make money off it like a sports person can. in reality: the exploitation of lower class feels so likely

isn't the concern with surrogacy vs adoption (besides the fact that you could just adopt instead of surrogacy) that nobody makes a baby with the intent to seperate it from it's birthparent?

In favour of surrogacy, perhaps maximum and minimum compensations could help and tax funded assistance for low income people to afford to pay that labour cost.

I think surrogates should be a paid for their time. Pregnancy takes a toll on the body as well as restrictions. We hire our bodies out for other labour. The surrogate mother should be recognized

Women’s bodies experience much wear and tear through pregnancy. Some only manifest later in life. Surrogates need to be compensated for the current work and the potential future impacts to their bodie

I know it’s not the same, but could you comment on the ethics of sperm donation? Can a man that donates be called a father, and should the child have the same right to know who they were?

Thanks for the video! As a lawyer, i always struggle with the regulation aspect. What conditions allow for consent, and how to prevent exploitation. I still don’t have a set opinion.

In my country 🇦🇺 we only allow altruistic surrogacy which is heavily regulated, and it remains very expensive. I have an emotive discomfort about the commodification of a child.

Good points. another aspect is the unhealthy industry created in poor countries. You are not only paying for the body of the baby, but also the mother. So 2 lives are sold.

In US, majority of adoption is step parent adoption. 2nd is adoption from foster care. In both, 1-2 bio parent(s) didn’t consent to the adoption. It was allowed under ‘child’s best interests.’

My Hawaiian friends told me of a custom where if your friend was sterile, you gave that person one of your kids. It makes a bigger family. I'd be more in favor of surrogacy if they kept in touch.
