@_imnotatheatresnob: [AD] 🎟️ I heard so many amazing things about @twostrangersmusical during its run at the Kiln Theatre (which I sadly missed due to its entire run being sold out), which makes me all the more glad it deservedly got a West End transfer at the lovely Criterion Theatre. Two Strangers (Carry A Cake Across New York) follows Dougal, a twenty-something Brit who has been invited to his estranged father’s wedding in New York. Meeting the bride’s sister Robin at JFK, they wind up on an adventure throughout the Big Apple with the titular cake in tow as they get to know each other over the next 36 hours. 🗽 It’s such a charming and hilarious rom com musical filled with heart yet it manages to find the emotion beneath all the silliness and montages (yep, there’s one). Believe me, when I laughed - I belly laughed! I’m fairly sure at points Sam Tutty broke character at points, we were laughing so much at his non sequitur lines. With an imaginative set by Soutra Gilmour that forgoes the trappings of cliched New York landmarks for a very creative use of suitcases and a revolving stage, it feels much bigger than its intimate staging would make you believe. It makes all the musical numbers, which I ended up playing on loop driving home, feel so exciting and exhilarating. However, the highlight has to be the phenomenal performances from OLIVIER WINNER Sam Tutty (Dear Evan Hansen) and Dujonna Gift, who have such amazing chemistry together while making Dougal and Robin feel so real even when being the traditional rom com staple of the idealist vs. the cynic.
