Have you ever been prescribed antibiotics for a cough without an x-ray first? Antibiotics are only useful for a cough if there’s a diagnosed bacterial pneumonia. The most accurate way to diagnose a pneumonia is with a chest x-ray. Studies continue to show that no other way (including listening, or things like duration of cough or type of cough) is able to accurately diagnose pneumonia. I can’t tell you how many patients, of all ages, I see who have been put on antibiotics to treat “bronchitis” or “pneumonia” without any x-rays done. A large majority of coughs are from viral infections and don’t need antibiotics. Further, antibiotics are not without risk. At an individual level, they put you at risk of medication side effects as well as opportunistic infections by altering the balance of “good” bacteria in your body. At a population level, overuse and misuse of antibiotics breed resistant bacteria. So, next time you’re prescribed antibiotics for a cough without an x-ray, question why, and whether they’re actually needed.
