@themuttmaster: The reason your puppy or a dog is reacting to your vacuum cleaner is because it’s something new in the room and it makes a loud sound and moves erratically! “Fight or flight! I can’t let myself outside, so ATTACK or HIDE.” Try this: Take your vacuum cleaner out of the closet and leave it in the living room. Don’t plug it in. Don’t turn it on. Just let your dog get used to it being there. Next, do some training and basic commands right next to the vacuum. You want to create a positive association with your dog and the vacuum cleaner. It’s important to be patient and take as much time as needed. Sometimes this might take a day or two. With Lucy, it was less than an hour. Next, plug in the vacuum and turn it on, but don’t vacuum your floor yet. Let your dog get used to the sound, then start vacuuming. Start off by moving slowly, then a little faster. If your dog is still wary, try tethering him to you and then vacuum. This way the vacuum is going away from your dog instead of towards. Each dog is different so you may have to try other things to redirect their attention using positive rewards.
