Best description of how a sail works I have ever seen.

All this time, I thought the wind had to be blowing behind the boat 😂

hi actual competitive sailor here! The strange thing about this vid is that if the boat were really going that fast, then the sail would be flapping like a flag (luffing).

It's a brilliant explanation, thank you 👍

There is leeway…the wind is pushing the boat in the direction of the wind at the same time..the boat isn’t on wheels…The keel helps counteract that but is also why the abrupt angle isn’t efficient.

This is before you factor in that triangular sails work more links wings

Wouldnt it also be useful to note how it’s not just the direct force of the wind PUSHING the boat but also the lower pressure on the other side of the sail PULLING the boat

PhD in visual perception here. Yes, it is an optical illusion. The upward field of optic flow (dot grid) contrasts with the (vertically) stationary boat to make it seem to move slightly downward.

are you sure it is not because of forces similar to plane wings? thats what i think is the actual force happening

This is such an awesome explanation. To add Bernoulli’s principal adds lift due to high pressure on the under side of the wing, high pressure always moves to low pressure which would be on the top side

the angle or the sail is like a gearbox in a car

NEIDIN SAILBOAT :
Steve. You must consider headsails and mainsails seperately. Air travels faster over the leeward side of the sail than windward, causing low pressure. A portion of this LP "sucks" the boat forward!

Shouldn't you be replacing the wheels with marbles/ball bearings?

I think people get confused thinking the yacht and wind as two identical marbles and one marble’s energy can only be transferred the energy from the other. The hit marble could never go faster.

🤔 is it better to think in terms of conservation energy i.e. the more wind energy u capture by changing the angle the more u can convert it to spead

and maximum speed is also determined by waterline length.
