@anastasiaofthedark: Building your local scene— I started out building my local scene in August of 2023, with a strong desire to create a scene comprised of people who actually look like me. People of color, diverse age ranges… just not straight white. It was disappointing to come into the DC scene, which is supposed to be predominantly people of color, and be met with events consisting of middle-aged white people and nothing but. A community consists of so many different perspectives and offerings that come from people of all backgrounds. Goth deserves that too. Goth is not a white subculture, it is a music and community based subculture. I now run Slings and Arrows, a monthly 21+ event at Jimmy Valentine’s in DC. I occasionally put on bands, all-ages events, markets, and picnics through the year with the help of my friends. No, it won’t cost you an arm and a leg to build a community and find amazing people.
