🔥 Jaw pain keeps coming back? Your SLEEP could be part of the problem! Most people assume pain causes poor sleep—but research suggests the relationship goes both ways, and sleep problems can increase pain sensitivity and contribute to persistent pain. 💡 Does this sound familiar? ⚡ You regularly sleep less than 6 hours ⚡ You struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep ⚡ You wake up tired or unrefreshed ⚡ Your sleep problems started before your pain ⚡ A bad night of sleep = worse pain the next day If so, improving your sleep may be an important piece of addressing your jaw pain. 🛠️ Try this sleep restriction protocol: ✅ STEP 1: Track for 1 week Figure out how many hours you’re actually sleeping on average each night. ✅ STEP 2: Add 30 minutes If you average 5½ hours of sleep, your initial sleep window becomes 6 hours. ✅ STEP 3: Pick a consistent wake-up time Wake up at the same time every day, even after a rough night. ✅ STEP 4: Calculate your bedtime If your wake-up time is 7 AM and your sleep window is 6 hours, your initial bedtime would be 1 AM. The idea is to consolidate your sleep by spending less time awake in bed and building stronger sleep pressure. ✅ STEP 5: Gradually increase your sleep window Once your sleep becomes consistently consolidated, gradually move your bedtime earlier until you reach a sustainable amount of sleep. 🔥 Why this matters: The goal isn’t to permanently sleep LESS. This is a temporary behavioral strategy used in CBT-I to consolidate sleep before gradually expanding the amount of time spent in bed. ⚠️ Sleep restriction can cause significant daytime sleepiness and isn’t appropriate for everyone. Extra caution or professional guidance is important if you have a seizure disorder, severe mental illness, high fall risk, or a job/commute where sleepiness could be dangerous. If your jaw pain keeps coming back, don’t overlook what happens during the 8 hours before your day even starts. #JawPain #TMJ #Sleep #Insomnia #ChronicPain
