@allydoesdatascience why wouldnt one learn both? I am currently doing my masters/bachelor's degree in riskmanagment Engineering with extra courses in mathematical statistics. R is much nicer for statistics since some fields like extreme value theory only have good libraries in R. however I am trying ro learn gpu accelerated computation which was more straightforward in python. I was thinking that one should know both since they are good at different things?

Related to this - get familiar with Spark or other distributed big data processing framework. For loops aren’t gonna cut it, and in real life the data will never fit in memory on a single machine.

Would you say that getting a PhD for either the second or third option is more realistic? From my experience companies only hire PhDs for those heavy deep learning jobs.
