It was formed from earlier SS combat units and became a heavily equipped armored division that fought on many major fronts. Its history is both military and controversial because of its involvement in serious war crimes. The division first saw combat during the invasion of France in 1940, where German forces used Blitzkrieg tactics to defeat Allied armies. In 1941, Das Reich participated in Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It fought in major battles, including the advance toward Moscow, and later took part in operations on the Eastern Front. During the war, Das Reich was equipped with tanks, armored vehicles, artillery, and mechanized infantry. It participated in major battles such as the Third Battle of Kharkiv in 1943 and the Battle of Kursk, where German forces attempted to stop the Soviet advance. After heavy fighting in the Soviet Union, the division was transferred to France in 1944 to rebuild its strength. Following the Allied landings in Normandy on June 6, 1944, Das Reich was ordered to move toward the battlefield. During this movement, members of the division committed several atrocities against civilians. The most infamous event connected to Das Reich was the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre on June 10, 1944, when 643 civilians were killed by members of the division. The destroyed village was preserved after the war as a memorial to the victims. In Normandy, Das Reich fought against Allied forces during the campaign following D-Day. Despite strong resistance, the division suffered heavy losses due to Allied air power, artillery, and superior resources. It later participated in the Battle of the Bulge in late 1944 and fought in Germany during the final months of the war. By 1945, the division had been severely weakened and eventually surrendered to Allied forces. After the war, the Waffen-SS was declared a criminal organization at the Nuremberg Trials because of its involvement in war crimes and crimes against humanity. Today, historians study Das Reich from both military and historical perspectives. While the division was involved in important battles and armored operations, its history cannot be separated from the crimes committed by its members. The story of Das Reich remains a reminder of the destructive consequences of extremist ideology and total war.
