What you’re looking at is the version of my relationship that everyone else got to see. The holidays looked incredible. Behind the photos were holidays I remember for completely different reasons, arguments, interrogations, walking on eggshells and trying desperately not to ruin another day. The gifts looked romantic and generous but gifts could be manipulation, then ammunition later. They became a running list of everything he had done for me whenever I was hurt by his behaviour. Look at everything I give you. Look at everything I do for you. And somehow, I would end up being called ungrateful. The family photos looked happy. The videos made him look like an involved dad. Our smiling photos made us look like a couple who had everything but I know what happened outside the frame. Maybe the strangest part of watching these videos now is that the person looking back at those memories knows something the person in the videos didn’t. She thought these moments were evidence that things weren’t really that bad. I know now that they were part of what made the reality so difficult to see. What looked like a beautiful life from the outside felt completely different to the person living inside it. #coercivecontrol #hidden #abuse #manipulation #family
