@astronomerdean: The Big Dipper is not an official constellation but is just the rear end and tail of the Big Bear, Ursa Major. But for most city dwellers, the Big Dipper is the only part of the bear we can see. The stars are all different distances away so they only outline a spoon shape from our perspective.
